Economic Development in Port Alice
Port Alice is hard at work trying to overcome the temporary closure of the Port Alice pulp mill while it was under bankruptcy protection. In December 2005 the pulp mill was purchased by Neucel Specialty Cellulose and is back in operation. The Village is slowly restoring services and working at diversifying the local economy.
In October, 2006 the Village opened up a light industrial park and has put all nine lots on the market. To date four of the nine lots have been sold, two of which are being cleared in preparation for activity.
Council is taking advantage of every funding opportunity available, in order to build a marina so that we can actively market the community as a tourist destination. We have a prime water way for those who seek outdoor adventure and enjoy fishing. Council is also negotiating with an Alberta Company who is considering developing a resort on the uplands to where the marina is intended to be built.
Council will also be applying for shell fish leases in order to explore any and all aqua culture opportunities that would be suitable in Neroutsos Inlet/Quatsino Sound.
